Different Kernels?

At www.kernel.org they have different versions to download. I just wanted to know what they meant by these few things.

This one I understand its the "official" release you can say.

The latest stable version of the Linux kernel is: 2.6.21.5

These are the two I had questions about if any one could please explain what a prepatch and snapshot is. I noticed that they were always the highest version. Are they alpha or beta stages?

The latest prepatch for the stable Linux kernel tree is: 2.6.22-rc6

The latest snapshot for the stable Linux kernel tree is: 2.6.22-rc6-git3

They're release candidates. Guess that's better than alpha or beta;

So thats what the RC means. Thanks for the info now I can search a little more on the topic.
