Difference between wine, crossover office and cedega?
 

Hi all,

This is actually two questions. First, what is the difference (if any) between wine and crossover office? Is it just that Codeweavers has paid tech support whereas with wine you can only ask questions in places like here or does CrossOver Office have some additional features that are not and never will be found in wine?

Also, regarding Cedega, I understand that is also a fork of wine, though unlike Crossover office, they don't give the new code back to wine.

Is there a value in getting that as well? And is there any way to get it without paying $5 a month. I don't mind a one time licensing fee if it will get some of the very expensive windows games I own running under linux, but I'm not interested in a subscription to pay $5 every single month forever. . .

I own around 30 or so windows games. I'm planning to put them onto my new HTPC which will be running Knoppmyth if I can get them to run. Otherwise, I suppose I can try selling 'em though I expect I'll get a fraction of what they cost me. . .

I already use Opensuse 10.2 for my main computer (web browsing, word processing, etc.).

Cedega is indeed a fork of wine, but cedega is optimized for gaming purposses. Allthough "most" "some" games will also work with WINE, i myself have noticed that performance is better under Cedega. (tested using FPS Meter in World of Warcraft).

I don't have any experience with codeweavers, but AFAIK it's mainly for products like MS Office. Where with WINE you generally can install more applications from windows. I have installed Guitar Pro 5 under linux using WINE. Works like a charm.

Wine is the soure code for the commercial product Codeweavers sells. Codeweavers is the name of the company that develops it as Wine and sells it as Crossover Office. I never had much luck trying to use Wine but other people have. For $40 or whatever it is the Codeweaver commercial product is well worth it to me. We have some proprietary stuff at work that will only run under Windows is why I use it.

If I understand it correctly, WINE takes tweaking to make it work for various apps. Codeweavers tweaks it for certain apps that they support.
I ahve used both with some success.

I find it curious that, while WINE is still at 0.97, Crossover Office is now at 6.0 I have always felt the Codeweavers was just a bit too much hype.....
