difference between SMTP and sendmail

when using ximian evolution, I had some problems with setting up an SMTP account for 'just' POP3 addresses.

next I tried the 'sendmail' function instead, and I had no problems ...

how does 'sendmail' work differently from SMTP?

SMTP is a protocol. Sendmail is an MTA - it sends mail using SMTP.

If you are referring to the sending mail option in Ximiain Evolution - here it is:

If you choose SMTP, you'll be asked to supply an SMTP server (maybe your ISP's SMTP server).

If you choose sendmail, Evolution will use your local sendmail service (as if your own machine acting as an SMTP server) to send email.

in my case, sendmail works just perfectly!
