Execute the following on your terminal:
Code:
man halt
man poweroff
man shutdown
Try to understand what is written there, then you can ask specific questions !

Hi,

shutdown -r is same as reboot which reboots your system
shutdown -h is same as halt to bring down your system

There are lot of options involved in this. Check the man pages

Code:
man halt
man shutdown

halt etc

A tip, try putting in 'man man' in a terminal , without the quotes, to get an idea of how the man pages are set out.
All three commands are a succession of signals sent to stop processes in an orderly manner with differing functionality. When using 'shutdown' it will ask for a time, 'now' usually works.

Fred.
