Grub 2 seems to be the successor of grub1, have a read-up here and maybe there

the difference is in syntax, i guess.and also grub 2 has more features

Lots of things. If you really want details, google would be the better guy to ask. I use both, but i like grub legacy (1) better because of the fact, there is no need to run update-grub every time i change my menu. This is very convenient with my chain load setup
