difference adm - root

Just wondering.

What is the difference between adm and root?
I have files owned by root and group root.
Furthermore, I have files owned by root and group adm (or vice versa...).

What is the difference and how should I approach this when issues of ownership may present themselves?

* I use Kubuntu (Edgy)

root is the super user on Linux or Unix systems and can basically do anything on the system. The admin group on Ubuntu is a group consisting of non root users who are allowed root privileges using sudo. I am not sure how the group and file ownership will affect you because this depends on the files.

Thanx a bunch!

Just needed that push in the right direction to sort out how to think in the world of Linux.
The picture of how this works is a lot clearer now, and getting more so every step I take
