dial up will not establish PPP0 interface (Mandrake 10.1)
After my Windows shut down so many times on me, it was suggested that I give Linux a try. I asked around and several said I should try Mandrake for its ease for newcomers. I got Mandrake 10.1 a couple weeks ago and am still trying to get it online.
We installed M 10.1, installed an external modem to serial port ttyS0. We use kkkp, it dials, sounds like its talking a few seconds, get an error message > Unable to establish interface ppp0, and that's it!! We are using an HP 763n and have local dial up internet. We are using a BestData 56K exteral modem. At the front of the book it says to test serial port using setserial and kppp, if it works install that setserial command into the rc.setserial file. Then we made that executible. Thats all the book says and we still come up with the same error. What should I do or where should I look to get online? Thanks so much!! Jo |
Did you use the Mandriva Control Center to configure the modem and internet access?
|
um no, not that I know of. I'm afraid I don't know where the control center is...I am brand new to this. I've checked online for possible corrections, but haven't come across control center.....

To access the Mandrake Control Centre ( MCC )
go to the Star in the bottom LHS of your screen click - this will bring up your main menu Go "system" Go "Configuration" Go "configure your computer" Enter the root password This will bring up the Mandrake Control Centre Go "Network and Internet" and from there just select what you want to do my advice is to just look around at the various options before you start changing anything hope this helps floppy |
THanks! We have been doing that (just didn't know it was the Control Center!).
When we get to the INternet/Network part, all we get is options for the ethernet hookup. We have ethernet in the machine, but we don't have DSL, we have dial up. The machine doesn't seem to be dial-up friendly. |
This works for Mandrake 10.0
so it could be slightly different in 10.1 Go to MCC Go to "Network & Internet" Go to "new connection" Select "Modem connection" then "next" The next screen for me was Modem * Manual choice Select ttyS0 / Com 1 ( assuming its plugged in to your serial port ) Next screen is Dial Up account options then Dial up account IP Options - leave on automatic then DNS parametres - leave on auto then IP parametres - Gateway - leave on auto it then may ask for an installation CD to install software follow any other instructions hope this helps floppy |
just your security setting. i was setting a box up and security was set alittle to high and it was blocking kppp for some reason. didnt have to to check so i just dropped security one level and installed some safe gaurds.
start -> configure computer -> network& internet-> new lan, network then the option for dial up or modem. or bring up a consol and type " lspci " to make sure it sees your modem. |
I think I'm getting closer to being on- line. Thanks for the suggestions! I'm still not quite there yet. When I get to Manage Connections in MCC the top drop box gives 3 options; eth0, eth1, and modem(ppp0). When I chose modem(ppp0) the bottom Apply button is not available. I think if I could effectively choose it (cause that's what I want) something would happen....
Thanks Again! |
I'm wondering if that is because no connection is set up yet
therefore there is no connection to manage ??? when you get to "Network and Internet" try "new connection" click on "Modem connection" go "next" select the "modem" to configure the next screen should give the option of which serial port your modem is connected to and the next screen will give you your account options see how you go floppy |
