Dial-up and Linux?
 

I am a complete newbie to linux, and I really need help. I have Redhat 9.0 and Windows XP home installed on my computer. I use Netzero and I can get the internet to work with Windows, but I can't get it to even dial up in Linux. I would greatly apreciate any help you could give me.

Netzero uses a proprietary connection and doesnt run on Linux.

Well, I think Lindows licensed a dialer from them, so IT can.

I suggest switching to a local ISP that uses a standard like PPP.


I have also heard that NetZero was coming out with a linux client.

Welcome to the world of Linux dial-up, I've been trying to get a modem to work(2 weeks now), Linux doesn't seem to care for any-type of win-soft modems. I've just ordered an usb external and from what I have gathered they seem to work the best in Linux.
But that is my conclusion, from this site and some others I've been to. I'm still going to try different things until I pull what left of my hair out.
I have read about different modem(hard ones) that will work with Linux but to go out and purchase one just to try and see if it works didn't make much sense to me.

You don't say what kind of modem you have. If it is a "win modem" [it use Window files - that Linux doesn't have] the easy option for a "newbie" is to replace it. [along with your ISP].

The INTERNAL modem that I have is a U.S. Robotic model 5610B. It is about $60 at Walmart. It works very well with Red Hat & Mandrake.

It is an Creative Blaster Modem, I have to assume thats it a winmodem, Linux sees it as an HCF pci. But it won't connect? I' m using SuSE 8.2, I've tried all the drivers in SuSE, for the modems but maybe I'm not installing it correctly. Or maybe I'm not using the dial up correctly either? The USR sounds like a good idea and at that price I can give it a try. It shows it in the system. But when I sign on as root, and go to hardware it says none detected. Any help would really be appreciated.

I thought I was talking to Larker7 but I see you jumped in. I am far from a Linux/modem expert, but I'll give what I got.

I don't know SuSE, hell I don't know Red Hat/Mandrake either. But the latest version of each [8.0 & 9.0] have a "modem detect" feature that will tell you right off if your modem is Linux compatible. If it can't "find" the modem it's never going to connect.

Actually Mandrake will just above connect itself, I doubt that SuSE is this "user friendly".

Look at the tutorials at the top of the web page. I "think" they are under the "Library button". I can give you one "not very good" link to get you started.

I'm running dual drives, XP home on one, RedHat 8 on the other. I'm using an Actiontec V.90 PCI modem. Works great for both systems, runs about 60 bucks.
