DHCP problems
 

Hi there, another question from a total noob, but please help me out any way :P

I've installed Debian Woody from CD's and after that I had problems with my sound installation. No matter what I tried nothing would solve that. So I desided to install a new kernel to solve my problems. It worked... after installing 2.4.18 my sound card was working, BUT....
Suddenly my network stopped working. It used to get the IP from dhcp (on a network with DSL) and now it does not work anymore after I upgraded the kernel. I have looked around this forum and others, but can't seem to find a solution ???

How do I get the dhsp to work with the new kernel ?

did you use dhcpcd, or pump to set it up originally? (Or was it configured for you?) can you see the card with ifconfig?

Originally it was autodetected and configured to use dhcp.

When i run ifconfig:
Link encap:Local loopback
inet addr: 127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

hello, i just instaled a linux red hat 8 on my desktop, since the start it recognized my ethernet, and i am guessing you conect to network with a ethernet card, so, the linux recognized ethernet, fine, but it never conected at all to the internet, which was my goal... this hapened yesterday.. ok
so i looked around, in properties of this and that, finally i look at the ethernet properties and found out there was no irq port assigned for my ethernet..
so, i just selected irq#1 and bingo, here i am to say how happy i am that it worked fine... so, i read your post, did ya check these properties? maybe, hopefully this will help ;-)

you don't get an IP yet, r u sure you start dhcpcd when you start linux?you can config your ethernet card in X-window->network configuration,then choose get ip from dhcp.

I found out that during boot it says:

Configuring network interfaces: eth0:ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device

I guess that that's the problem but how do I get it to set the flags ?

Sounds like the driver for the network card isn' being loaded... try finding the right module and loading it on startup

So far I'm following you, and I also know (I think) what the name of the driver is, rtl8139.o
But where to find it and then get it to load at boot ???
