Device name changes each time I connect a USB drive? Can this be static?

Dear fellow members.

I have recently installed Archlinux on my fit pc at home and so far all is working perfectly.

I have one problem which I am not to sure how to resolve.

Each time I switch my external USB drive on the device boot name changes it is currently /dev/sdd1 before it was sdc1, I undestand it will becom SDD1 next time.

I’m using my server as a media server running Twonky Media, however the internal disk on a fit pc is somewhat limited so I have connected a external usb drive to increase storage. The point is I do not want to leave the external drive on all the time only when I get home and want to watch / listen to music etc.. So I turn the drive off and on when needed, I need to configure Arch linux to always mount this usb drive (being the only usb drive I’ll attach) to /dev/sdd1.

Could some one tell me if this is possible? If so how?
Can I also go as far as asking for an explanation of what the commands in the answer do?

Thank you for reading, thank you even more if you answered..

Regards

Colin

This can be solved with a udev rule.
