Device file system: which version of Linux support this feature

Which version of Linux start devfs support?

Does the old device file with major/minor number still
supported on the latest 2.6 version?
Thanks!

devfs is obsolete, it was replaced by udev a while back when 2.6 came of age... can't remember exactly when, must be at least 2 years since i saw it anywhere.

... and yes major/minor numbers are still supported/required under udev.
