device driver (serial , modem, lpt...) API document where to find ?


Where do I find / get documentation for device driver API's for a open source 2.4.X or 2.6.x linux distribution.

I am trying to learn programming in LINUX on an embedded hardware pls help me with the link or the source / refernce material.
