device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device)
I have no sound and everytime I #startx I get a message saying this:
_____________________________________ Sound server informational message: Error while initializing the sound driver: device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device) The sound server will continue, using the null output device. _____________________________________ How would I go about getting the right driver for this so it works, or is there just something I have to enable, I have no clue. What should I do to get some sound going? |
I get the exact same error. I've gone thru just about every Linux distribution you can name trying to get XF86, Lan and sound all working. So far I'm two out of three running Slackware 9 but still getting problems with my sound. My soundcard is Avance '97 and it's onboard. I tried installing an old ensoniq PCI I had lying around, no error message but no sound either.

You need to set up either OSS or ALSA - if you are using a sane distribution for newbies it will have programs that show you how to do this/try and do it for you.
It may be that your card is not supported. What make/model is it? |
how about root?
