/dev/sda to /dev/hda - Slack 13.37
 

Hello!

I installed new version of Slackware 13.37.
Till now Slackware always set primary ide hard disc to /dev/hda but now it set to /dev/sda.
That is ok.
But I like to add secondary sata disc, and now secondary sata disc want to be /dev/sda and everything freeze in some point.

What should I do? Can I change (manualy) primary ide disc to /dev/hda? Or what do you suggest to me?

All drives (IDE, SATA, USB, etc) are now using the sdX naming convention, the hdX names are no longer used. The same rules apply as before though, new drives will be given alphabetical designation. It doesn't matter if one is IDE and one is SATA, they will still be sda and sdb.

But it seems like you are saying that both drives are trying to take sda? How do you know this is happening? Is there some error message or system log you can provide which explains the situation?

Between the boot write me error and freeze, that can not booted on root /dev/sda (and something about uknown partititon)
On secondary disc I have fat16 (disc from some old computer).

I think that this is it.

And without secondary disc, work with no problem.

But always is the third options.. Maybe is something wrong with disc.

But when I tested it with live cd, it was everything ok!

Boot stop it, after write me kernel panic.... and freeze...

There is some way to go back to that hdx format I think. Not sure where that info is. When they first changed over they had a lot of posts on that subject.


In most bios's you set the hard drive order and boot order. That way your drives should be ordered as you wish them to be. Bios should pick what is sda based on drive and boot order.
