dev folder has 7523 items is it normal?

Hey I was looking around the system as you do when your new to things and probably going to break somthing and noticed that my dev folder has 7523 items is it normal?

I thought this folder was for devices? Lots of the files seem to be empty.

Please tell what you think

it's probably normal, esp. for red hat. i have over 2500 in mine, including some folders that have hundreds of files in them as well, easily putting me over 5000.

you are using a flat form /dev/ directory, which is created to contain a semi-exhaustive list of devices.

note that these are NOT real files and take up an obscenely minimal amount of space.

most distros now use devfs instead which dynamically creates these entries as and when they are needed, so is much smaller.
