Desktop question....

Opensourcerers,

I would like to ask something about default desktop for newly created users, I was just wonderin' that whenever I create a new user in Red Hat 9.0, and log that user, there is no desktop folder in the newly created users home directory, and when I try to locate it, it is located in the .gnome-desktop., this produce same results even if I created the user in X-windows or in the text mode... please help me...

what you mean by "desktop" folder?, what does it do csue iv never heard of it, then agian i dont stick to big desktop environments either

please be patient with cause' I'm a newbie...

what i mean is when a user browse his home directory, he should have a desktop folder in it... where he can find files such as the trash , home , start here and floppy... I'm just confused that my other accounts has their own Desktop folder...

i dono what you talking about but y not just copy that dirctory from another place?, its oviously part of a special deskotp enrironment program

it's like this... try to check your home directory... I'm sure you will find a Desktop directory there... now inside this desktop folder, it contains the desktop files such as start here, floppy & trash... now in my case... the files reside in .gnome-desktop(a hidden file), before when I add a user account it automatically creates the Desktop folder, but lately I found out that Red Hat 9 is not creating it automatically...

Not if he doesn't run those desktops, he won't. I don't have any such folder and think they're an abomination. I hate visible config directories in my home directory. They ought to be against the FHS. You say when you create a new user - has the user started the IDE? What's in the hidden directory may be a template directory and the user's Desktop directory won't be generated until he actually uses the IDE.

Like SciYro says, if it doesn't generate one, that is weird and I don't know the solution. But just copy a directory from elsewhere for now and research at your leisure.
