what are your system specs, also fedora core 6 is old, the newest version is fedora 8, you might want to try that

You could try a live distro such as Ubuntu or OpenSUSE to see if your hardware is able to support effects.

The most general reason for this occurring is driver issues. You're probably using default xorg drivers. In that case, generally I've found desktop effects don't work.

Using Fedora, you can get the nVidia drivers via RPM. The package is something along the lines of kmod-nvidia and can be obtained at www.livna.org.

For ATi drivers, you'll have to ask someone else. I don't use their cards.

If you're using S3 graphics cards, http://www.s3graphics.com/en/resources/drivers/.

If, after installing your applicable proprietary drivers, it still doesn't work, come back and ask.

Why would anyone want 'desktop effects' enabled?

LinuxCrayon 12-24-2007 09:15 AM

Because Desktop Effects are fun and distracting. Plus when your friends come over and you show them they're amazed and you're actually cool instead of just being a nerd.

desktop effects cannot be enabled

[avinash@localhost ~]$ desktop-effects

It probably won't work.

First, you have a graphics card, although it might not really appear so because it may be on-board. Well, it's not technically a card, but it is a graphics device. Which could be a card. But it's not because they opted to build it into the system.

Anyway.

Although I am by no means an expert on the matter, it appears that it's complaining that you don't have hardware acceleration or something similar. This could be as simple as a lack of proprietary drivers or as depressing as it just won't work with your display.
