Desktop dissapears under Demudi (Debian)

I have recently installed debian 3.1 sarge, then changed it to Demudi using software from the Agnula project (sorry, can't include the URL as have less than 5 posts). I have a quite annoying problem - when I open up the computer/file manager type app, if I open more than about 4 or 5 folders, then all the icons on my desktop (except home, wastebasket and computer) disappear and none of the shortcuts from the "applications" menu work anymore! This happens until I restart. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening and how to fix it? Here's some more info:

System: AMD Athlon 64, 512mb RAM, Linux running from 1 *40GB IDE hard drive, CD-RW drive, DVD ROM drive, M-Audio Audiophile USB.

Sounds like a file manager problem. Are you using gnome? KDE? ...? Did it happen after installation of demudi?
