Desktop App Switching and Clam Install

Please use baby noob answers. I've only been using a comp for a short time and know little of anything. If you have a 'go to' answer, please say where I'll find the 'go to'. :)
I installed fedora core 4 last night. It gave me the gnome desktop. I would prefer to use the KDE. I have KDE installed, but I do not know how to switch to it from gnome. How do I do this?
I downloaded clam antivirus this morning, but I discovered I have not enough knowledge to set it up. Please help me. I need the most basic of instructions, please.

Welcome

9 As far as logging into KDE. In your login screen is a button labeled "Session". Click on that and you can select "KDE". Login as normal and you'll have the KDE desktop.

What did you download for Clam? Post the filename of what you've got.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting the anti-virus software set-up. Now that you're running Linux you don't have to worry your own machine becoming infected. You can, however, pass one on to your Windows friends. It can't hurt anything to have it running, but I don't think it's vital.

Good luck on your journey. You've started the right way, by joining LQ. The forum contains the answer to just about any question you're likely to have. Beyond that, there are loads of people here every day that know Linux extremely well - most very willing to help.

Good attitude. Very often we'll point you to the answer instead of just answering your question. This is not meant to be rude. It's just to teach you the search skills you'll need to start to help yourself.

Thank you,Dragineez. I am running KDE now.

You said-
"What did you download for Clam? Post the filename of what you've got."
I really am a noobie. I'm not sure how to go about finding a filename. It is in my firefox downloads as "clamav-0.88.tar.gz". Is that it?

Thank you for the encouragement and advice. I hope to learn a lot here.

Glad To Help

9 Pleased I was finally able to provide some good advice.

The file you downloaded is to install from source. Since you say you are both new to computers and Linux, installing from source may be a bit of a tall order. Do yourself a favor and do it the easy way first. I'm lazy, so I always opt for the easy way if available.

From: http://www.clamav.net/

In the Downloads section, go to the "binary packages and ports". On that page, go to:

http://crash.fce.vutbr.cz/crash-hat/4/clamav/

Download:

clamav-0.88-1.i386.rpm

Installation instructions at:

http://crash.fce.vutbr.cz/yum-repository.html

Then run:

yum update clamav
or
up2date -u clamav

To make sure you have the latest virus definitions.

Cheers!
