Desk top area sizing in SUSE 9.0

I have a 17" Toshiba portable with SUSE 9.0 installed on a second partition. SUSE starts fine, but
the desk top area is about 30% of the total area of the display. The largest resolution is set in the
control panel. I would like to increase the size of the desk top. Thanks for any help....Bill Swarat
