Download the dependency and install it.

better and easier way is to add a repo and then try installing. this will most probably solve your problem.

We could provide better more detailed advice if we knew what distribution you are running.
Please either state it in your post, or update your profile to include your Linux Distro.

ok firstly how do i download the dependency??
and i run gutsy but the software is to be also run on hardy

Should be as easy as using apt-get.

sudo apt-get install vlc

if you use apt-get to install it the dependencies should be automatically resolved.

Directions are the same for Gutsy and Hardy

no no. i cannot download it that way...my net connection is too slow..

1) Run "apt-get install vlc"
2) The output will tell you ALL the packages apt wants to install, including dependencies. (Ignore suggested packages, just look at, "The following packages will be installed.") It will then ask you whether to do the install. Answer no.
3) Download all the packages apt was going to install.
4) Now you have all the files you need to install vlc.

I don't see how downloaded them manually is going to be faster.. unless you are downloading them somewhere else ?
