Dependency's
Hello All
I am new to any unix based environment so please forgive I installed intrepid and I am having issues grasping some basic concepts of the OS. For example I am trying to install VirtualBox. When installing the .deb file using package manager it returns an error: <snip> "Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libqtgui4" </snip> So naturally I tried to find an install the package. I found "http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/i386/" is a good place too look, please correct me if I am wrong. When I DL the package and install it spits out another Error saying I am missing a different dependency. When searching and installing the new dependency it needs another dependency. I am guessing there is a better method for installing dependencys? Thanks in advance |

I suggest that you use the synaptic program to install VirtualBox from the Ubuntu repository. Synaptic's logic is high level enough that it will find all of VirtualBox's dependencies and install all of the necessary packages together. ---------------------- Steve Stites |
I tried Synaptic Package Manager however I am very new to installing apps with it.
When I search for the exact filename of VirtualBox it finds no results. When I use the "Add Downloaded packages" from the file menu it won't let me point to the VirualBox .deb file... its grayed out. thanks again |
Well, virtualbox is definitely there. Just open synaptic and use the "search" option.

You might also want to look and make sure that all the repositories are actually enabled. It could be that the one containing VirtualBox has been commented out.

Yes, that is possible. Have a look at System > Admin > software sources, the third party tab in particular.
