demaged disc partitions

Hi, I wonder if anybody could help me to do something with my computer. I will start from the begining (Im sorry for my english, Im not native speaker). Ive got a notebook with installed windows XP. There is a 100GB disk in the computer. This disk is divided to 2 logical discs (partitions) called disc C (contains windows and programs) and D (contains data). The disc C has 20GB, the disc D has 70 GB. Ive got live CD of the mandriva linux. I wanted to cut off some space from the disc D and install linux to this location. I started install procedure, but when I got to the partitioning of the disc linux created only small partitions for itself. It looked wierd to me and I said to myself: I have to make disc D smaller to create more space. I made disc D smaller, but the linux partitions stayed as they were. Well, I said to myself: I did not proceed so there will be no changes on the disc, I will shut down linux and I will do this job afte lunch. When I shut down linux, it does not work properly, so I rebooted the computer. Well, windows did not work! It ask me if I want to run it under the emergency mode, but it did not help. Only the first screen appeared and then computer rebooted automaticaly. Well, I launched liveCD again to look what happend. I have full acces to both discs (partitions C and D respectively) and they contained (I guess they did) all files. Well, I started linux installer again to look at disc partitions. The C looked OK, when I clicked on D, linux replied (Im sorry but I dont remember it exxactly)that there is something wrong with it (I mean partition table or such stuff). Furtheremore, there was a 20GB free space on the disc without any partition and there were 3 linux partitions at the rear of the disc. Well I said to myself, I will reinstall windows and it will be OK. But it wasnt. During instalation windows asked where to install and printed: DISDK 0, AT ID 0 ON BUS 0 ON ATAPI. SETUP CANNOT ACCES THIS DISK. Can anybody tell me what to do, how to solve this situation, how to restore windows (Ive got no system backup CDs)? Thank you.

I think you'll be able to restore Windows by putting in your Windows setup disk and booting to the recovery console. Select your Windows installation on drive C: and fixmbr - which will re-write the master boot record and let you start Windows.

You may find that you no longer see drive D: as it looks like the partition has been deleted. But don't panic yet - there are tools around that will recover a broken partition.

Hope this helps,
Stuart

, however, are you sure to do that? Isnt it dangerous? Im little bit scared, because this is the first time when something that bad happened to my computer. is this procedure safe?
