dell optiplex gx-1 update to debian unstable

During installation of bootsplash for Debian which requires including sources from unstable it showed an update which I installed. During update I lost video rebooted went to aptitude to see what was still installed. I chose to continue with the upgrade to unstable, it shows missing locales etc. My question is after completion is there a log or a record that I can view to see if they're necessary? If so where would I be able to view it? Would it be a var/log/installer item?

It looks like I'm going to have 2.6.32 kernel now. Will the bootsplash/fb on dell optiplex gx1 work with ati rage pro?
