Dell latitude E6430 - Video driver issues

So I can not for the life of me get my 5200m graphics card to work.
I'm heavily considering going back to windows which i dont want to, but i need the 5200m's power.

This is a dual graphics card laptop

an intel and the 5200m

is there anything i can do? at my wits end.

Which distro are you trying to use? Do you have the latest version?

sorry I was half awake when I did this thread.

So I'm running: Debian 10 buster
fresh install.
I've tried the Nvidia-390 legacy and it still only uses the weak intel and can't even run glxgears. I also tried bumblebee and I had no idea what I was doing really and that resulted going nowhere with others saying my specific laptop is a pain.

I guess the3 nouvue driver gives no joy?

https://linuxconfig.org/nvidia-gefor...-linux-8-64bit

I know the instructions are for Jessie. But Debian usually follows the same format for non free stuff.

Find out which is the appropriate Nvidia driver with the instructions here (points 1.,2.,3.).

tried this but with my appropriate drivers and it resulted in an automatic black screen on reboot.

The appropriate driver is the one listed in the original post.
it's a legacy driver.
even used Nvidia detect to confirm.

Sorry, I must have missed the fact that this is a dual graphics setup.
Which "(dual or hybrid) graphics on Linux" tutorial did you follow to set it up?

honesty I don't have my laptop on hand. left for work over the road in a hurry.
I unfortunately, couldn't get it to just use the 5200m only (or at all for that matter) and stop with the integrated Intel.

So I (regrettably) formatted and put windows on it and Bam, uses the 5200M perfectly fine.

I Have extra HDDs so I'm more than willing to slap a fresh install of DEBIAN and follow any steps anyone has if they think they can solve it.

If I can get it working by testing in a second HDD I'd jump back over to it on my main Hard drive in a heart beat. but until then, no 5200m no Linux for me. I need the extra power.

im not worried about the the other graphics card ever being used as I'm always plugged in when using my laptop and from what I understand the dual set up is for power saving and the 5200M takes over for heavier work.

all I want is for the 5200M to be the primary.

Wolf.Linux,

Check that the Optimus control panel is enabled in the BIOS.

These links may help you:

Go into BIOS and see if you can disable the intel GPU completely.

I found a tab for Optimus and disabled this. how can I check to see if it's now disabled? (and not still using the intel)
