Dell Inspiron E1705 - Ubuntu Sound Problems

hey guys,

aight so i installed linux ubuntu on my laptop(no windows nothing but ubuntu on my laptop).

i have been listening to music for a long time now ever since i got it installed, i put it to sleep and then when i brought my computer back up, the screen was blank and i had to do a manual shutdown. when i booted up my laptop, THE SOUND STOPPED WORKING.

this stinks for a guy who loves his music... can someone help me and figure out why my sound is messed up?

i did this in the terminal:
sudo apt-get install module-assistant
sudo m-a update
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i alsa

and rebooted and nothing works. i thought it may have been my music files so i tried to open the songs in rhythembox, amarok, and watever other default comes wit the install. NO SOUND.!!!

someone please help me get my sound back.

Just a thought

I had trouble with my sound as well. I still do to some degree. I can't login in and go directly to KDE. I have to at least do a ls from the prompt and then activate KDE.

Anyway, here is how I got mine to work. Keep in mind I'm logged in a root. (Yeah I know, I very NON Linux thing to do.) So I ran alsaconf. It finds and activates my card. It also unmutes my card. I then run alsamixer jut to see that it's unmuted. Now I know there is a way in alsamixer to unmute things, but I never could get them to STAY unmuted. I guess i don't know how to save. Never the less, I activated KDE and then ran Amarok. It works. It didn't right away, I ended up activating Xine and some of the other media players. After about 3 players, it cracked and popped and has worked ever since. Essentially, I guess I just have the sound muted and couldn't get it to stop.

Good Luck
Ace

yo got it.

well, the easiest and quickest way i got my sound back was:

i had a 500 GB external hard-drive
backed up all my files that i needed onto it.
erased and reinstalled linux ubuntu and fully updated it and in the process of getting the little amount of programs you actually need for this OS.

all this with the help of my linux/computer savvy roommate.

if you are unhappy wit your sound, juss do wat i did. specially if you have an external hard-drive.
