Possibly because Dell sells computer with linux on them? And if they told you how to do it yourself, they couldnt make a profit.
Are you sure you have a good/bootable cd that you are trying?
Also, why not just stick in a floppy book disk and start from there?

Which distro are you trying to install? I have read that Fedora CDs had problems with the CD-Roms shipping with some of Dell's computers. There are a few threads in this forum, prob with solution :-) so don't be frustrated.

I have a dell and i was able to boot from my CD drive no problem. Also dell only provides support for any programs pre-intsalled by them. If they gave support for everything they would get to many calls.

I have never had a problem booting a cd in a Dell. What model is it? Did you actually get into the BIOS? Have you tried F12, which brings up the boot options menu from which you can choose the cd/floppy/hd/whatever?
