Dell Dimension 2400 AC'97 Chipset Driver for Fedora Core 2
My sound hasn't worked since I installed Fedora Core 2. I have tracked it down to being a chipset (82801DB ICH4 AC'97) problem. I searched intel's website with no result. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
PS: I am running a Dell Dimension 2400 with the integrated "Extreme" multimedia package. LOCO |
hi locolodo, welcome to lq. have you tried running a mixer and unmuting sound?
|
Thanks for the welcome and your response.
I looked through my mixer and saw that some outputs and inputs were muted. I unmuted all that was possible and still am having problems. The autodetect seemed to have found my integrated sound device but I hear nothing when I play the test sound. I think my problem may be with the proper device drivers... Is there something else I can try? LOCO |
post the output of the following commands
/sbin/lspci -v lsmod good luck. |

i was looking for hardware specs, as you guessed, and any loaded modules, ls = list, mod = modules. in linux "drivers" are actually modules, so i was looking for your "drivers" w/the lsmod command. here is you sound card
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB (ICH4) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01) Subsystem: Dell Computer Corporation: Unknown device 0160 Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 3 I/O ports at ee00 I/O ports at edc0 [size=64] Memory at feb7fa00 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512] Memory at feb7f900 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256] Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2 judging from this, your drivers are all loaded fine snd_mixer_oss 14017 2 snd_intel8x0 30829 3 snd_ac97_codec 58821 1 snd_intel8x0 snd_pcm 83529 1 snd_intel8x0 snd_timer 25413 1 snd_pcm snd_page_alloc 8393 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm gameport 4033 1 snd_intel8x0 snd_mpu401_uart 7361 1 snd_intel8x0 snd_rawmidi 21733 1 snd_mpu401_uart snd_seq_device 6473 1 snd_rawmidi snd 45477 10 snd_mixer_oss,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_devi ce soundcore 7713 3 snd so i guess it'sback to the mixers, do you have kmix, or aumix? try one of those. check all your cables, be sure the speakers are plugged in properly. good luck. |
I know you are right about my drivers loading up ok. Would it be a possibility that Fedora Core 2 might not be able to support the sound card I have. I think when the OS detects my sound device it matches it as closely as possible and the "AC'97" device matches the criteria. The mixers I have on this are labeled "Analog Devices AD1981B [OSS Mixer]" and "Intel 82801db-ICH4 [Alsa Mixer]". My cables and plug are fine because I run Windows XP for my Business classes and the sound works on that OS. I messed around on those mixers I have previously listed, and still haven't been able to hear anything.
Am I right in assuming that this OS cannot support my card? LOCO |
can you run alsamixer, from a terminal?
|
I have ran alsamixer and executed alsactl store, on the command line, no sound, I have checked both reg volume and task bar, also my volume control from my sound and video menu. Still no sound.
Is there anyway you can step by step my noobie brain... :-) |
you might be having an irq conflict, it looks like your modem, nic, and sound card are all trying to use irq3. did you disable the pnp option in the bios before installing?
|
No I didn't, but I am also scared to mess around with the bios without some sort of step by step procedure... is there documentation on doing that, or can you help me out with that?
LOCO |
if your not comfortable going into the bios then don't. i'm not sure it would help w/out a reinstall anyway. if you feel like you can, you may find some documentation associated w/your motherboard. you should be able to go to the dell site enter your service tag number and get some info there.
good luck. |
Your sound should work, are you trying to listen to a cd?If so you need a cable from your cd player to the sound plug on your motherboard, just shutdown and ground yourself and look inside the case.
|
Well, I am trying to get sound out of this OS in any form possible. There is just no sound at all, in any application. If I were to reinstall, would I still have to mess with the BIOS? From the sounds of it I guess I would... It just doesn't make sense to me that Windows XP has sound in every application and Fedora Core 2 doesn't at all... Oh well I guess I will need to study up on my motherboard and see what I can find out.... If anyone else has some suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks for you help LOCO |
been doing some reading at redhats bugzilla, open a mixer, look for a pcm-2, if it;s there check that it's not set to zero. i'm still reading and will be back w/more info.
good luck. |
