delete trash icon

Oh god...this is awful. Not sure if I should feel this ashamed of this question or not...
How in the world do I delete my trash can icon off of the desktop?
Using Mandrake 9.1 with KDE. Thanks.

Why?

Oh geez...the same questions asked by my girlfriend. I want two things on my desktop only...just like on my windows machines...I want my wallpaper and weather, thats it. And on my Linux desktop I want my wall paper and liquid weather. Thats it. Everything else are in my panels which disappear after about 1 second. I like it clean looking and spotless...

Fair enough I suppose - what happens when u try and delete it?

mykyl 11-03-2003 01:23 PM

when I right click it there is no menu choice to delete it...and if I highlight it then hit the delete key it says..."you can't trash the trash bin"... there has to be a way...right? I mean this is Linux!!!!

Well, you can select it and then Shift-Delete, and it will be gone. But as soon as you delete something in a way that moves the deleted file to the trash, it will reapear. I haven't yet figured out how to get rid of it permanently

trash icon

well I found a temp solution until I can get rid of it. The only thing I wanted on my desktop to run at all times was liquid weater. LW can cover it up for the time being. I just looked at where my LW is going to be...scooted it out of the way and moved the trash icon to that area...moved LW back and BOOM, all covered up even after startup.

First right click on the desktop and see what the path for the Trash is. It should be something like
~/Desktop/Trash
Change this to something else not in the Desktop folder (that exists; e.g. create a ~/waste and point the path there).
In a terminal window, go into ~/Desktop and remove trash folder. And now the trashbin will be gone and won't get recreated (this is why you have to change the path; if you leave it as is, the trash bin will come back after logging out).
