Delete a program via the terminal.
 

Hello!!!

Am a newbie!!! LOL!!!

I have a program that will not work right from the start. The Ubuntu Software Center will not install it and will not delete it either. The program in question is Dropbox.

How can I delete this problem?

Unfortunately it does not work. Tells me that there is a program working and cannot "lock" whatever that means.
The program in question is Dropbox, the one where you can put your pictures and retrieve them from any platform.

Look in the FAQ that Dropbox ought to provide.
BTW Dropbox will have shared all your stuff with the NSA by now.

assuming all else is working ok, you could try "whereis dropbox" or "dpkg -L dropbox" to see if it present or look on synaptic to see if is installed or use the 'repair broken' feature in synaptic, you might have to access 'synaptic package manager' from a terminal via "gksudo synaptic" or try "purge dropbox" from a terminal (cmd). Note difference between d and D if you are using cmd (terminal).

Has nothing to do with Dropbox, but to do with the Ubuntu software center/updater. If it's checking for updates, or you're running software center, it has a lock on the package database...meaning you can't change it. So, stop whatever program it's complaining about, and try the command again.

surely 'Ubuntu software centre' does not do updates(?) only installs. Personally don't use it. Get info from synaptic and install with apt-get. Locks will pass, usually, then you can install. Perhaps there is some kind of builtin link/offer with Ubuntu software centre and Dropbox?

Hi,Possibly true, but not relevant. The software centre will be using the same low level dpkg backend and as such the /var/lib/dpkg/lock file created by any other apt/dpkg process will be respected.

Well, If at first you do not succeed, you trie again and again and again... LOL!!!

You guys helped me a lot. I made good use of your suggestions!!! Rest assured I fixed the problem.

I re-installed Ubuntu!!! LOL!!! There was something wrong with the installation and I could not get to where the problem was, so, I simply took my trusty little CD and re-installed it.

The bottom line is that I was being told that I needed to upgrade from 11 to 12 because 11 is no longer supported. Fine! That I did, however the system then says that 14.something is available and I should upgrade. That was one of my mistakes. The graphics I have are not supported on that upgrade, and something else I do not remember. So I abstained from upgrading to 14.something. End of argument, problem, issue, pain or dissappointment. However, when I point my cursor to something, I have to place the cursor a bit higher than where I want else I will be pointing below I want. The other issue I have, is that I have not seen a program to defrag the Hard Disk. Any suggestions?
