Default user has no permissions
 

Hi all,
I'm pretty new to Linux so hopefully this is an easy one to answer. I'm running Fedora core 4 on my desktop and I have a server running Debian 3.1. For a while I was doing everything as root, but as I've been learning more about Linux it sounds like that's not the smartest thing to do.

So, on my fedora box I have a regular user id. I can run everything I want, but I can't write files anywhere except for my home directory. The biggest problem I'm facing is that I recently burned some tunes and went to copy them to my Deb server, but I can't paste the files. The permissions on that directory are 777, so it seems like Fedora is keeping my id from being able to write to anywhere except my home directory. How can I change this?

Have you tried to login as root and change the permission of the folder of interest with your graphical file manager (Nautillus?)? You should be able to give your normal account permission to read, write or execute in that folder.

Well, here's the thing that I'm really confused about. The drive that I'm trying to copy these files to is a samba share on my Debian server. I've been able to copy stuff to this folder from various windows clients around my house without any trouble. When I look at the permissions on the folder, it looks like it should be available for rwx to anyone.

It seems like Fedora is doing something to override permissions. Or, maybe I'm losing it. When I'm logged in as root on Fedora, everything is fine. It's just the normal user account it created when I did the install that gives me trouble (which is what I would expect, just not this much trouble).

I'm trying to learn more about how these permissions work, but it almost seems like something else is going on.

I'll try your suggestion when I get home, though. Hopefully that will do it. Thanks!
