Hi folks. another newbie here, with a question. you may know that when clicking on one of the desktop icons, bring up a window named "desktop" that shows all the programs and folders that are on the desktop.

Well in the upper right corner is the [-][sq][x]
well right below that is [6dots][3lines][6dots]
well is there away to set the [3lines] as a default?
would be nice not to have to reset the detail view
every time. I look forward to a great new op sys.

It would help to know what distro/version with what desktop environment (KDE, Gnome, Unity, etc.) you are running.

Thank you Mr. Bell, yes It would help to know what distro/version is and with what desktop environment (KDE, Gnome, Unity, etc.) i am running. hoping to find out today from the guy who sold me the used PC. all i know at present is it is
Linux mint 17.3 from Ubuntu with cinnamon? but i will find out what KDE, Gnome, unity is and try to narrow or define my question. i do know that the same program on windows is called "windows Explorer" and that when i went to "tools" i could set the default for all the following "windows Explorer" screens to be in details from that point on. (does that help anyone to see what i a trying to learn? thanks to all who may see this, and to those who created Linux as i want to get away from MS. with my other new(used) PC.

linuxmint 17.3 cinnamon is sufficient.

am i correct that you want detailed file view to be the default for your file manager (windows explorer is a file manager, so is nautilus on mint cinnamon)?

in that case you have to go into the file managers preferences and enable it there.
when you open one of these windows, there is usally a menu "Edit", and there is usally "Preferences", and there should be something like "Default view".

i hope this helps.
i am not usng cinnamon, but most file managers are the same in that respect.
