Which Linux desktop GUI is normally installed by default?

GNOME in most cases.
it depends. most distros have on their sites different versions of the iso imgaes. i think they all have a iso image of lxce and KDE.

but usually their main edition is GNOME(at least for ubuntu)

It depends which distro you install. Ubuntu, Fedora, RedHat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop all default to GNOME. openSUSE selects nothing by default and you have to pick one. Kubuntu is the same as Ubuntu but it defaults to KDE. Mandriva defaults to KDE. Xubuntu is Ubuntu but defaults to XFCE. Damn Small Linux defaults to Fluxbox
