Default Display Manager experiment, do you think it would work?

Hello ya'll, i wanted to do a little experiment here by changing the default display manger to something like Firefox or GIMP or another program..

Since "Display Manager is a program"
Quote:

gnome.org: GDM is the GNOME Display Manager, a graphical login program.
i should be able to replace it by with any other program :)

According to Wikipedia...
Quote:

On most Linux distributions, the default display manager is selected in file /etc/X11/default-display-manager
So what would happen if i changed the content of /etc/X11/default-display-manager from default which is for example:
Quote:

/usr/bin/gdm
to
Quote:

/usr/bin/firefox
Do you think this could work..? :)

I know i know.. it's just an experiment.. lol :D

What does it have to do with packman file manager?? and yeah i bought a Mac and then i used Windows 7 until it expired and now i'm running openSUSE.. oh well... i'm back now :D

But i don't wanna do it cuz what if i mess something up.. oh wait.. i could do it on virtual machine.. hmm...

no, PCMANFM file manager

like if you check box for pcmanfm to "manage" desktop
it will run desktop with/without icons on like icewm/fluxbox,etc

like, in ~/.fluxbox/startup I can put
pcmanfm -d

and if box for managing desktop is checked it will start with flux, etc and display wallpaper/icons,etc

Hmm... i can't find /etc/X11/default-display-manager on my openSUSE... :( Where else could i look in order to change the default display manager..?

i wouldn't imagine that changing the file would mess things up beyond repair as long as you can get in using single user mode to change the file back

the only big issue i can see with replacing the display manager with a regular program is you lose the ability to authenticate users, which wouldnt be a big problem on a single user machine such as a kiosk, although you might be stuck at that point running as root which wouldn't be a good idea, would probably better to edit the local user's .xsession to replace the window manager with a program

but as a point of experiment i'm sure it's possible if the file isn't there try creating it
