Debian5: runnning monit deleted mplayer...
 

Hi all,
I was running monit yesterday - just checking it out really. I read the man page to understand what monit was all about. It looked like another good way to look at the way an application was working.
So I ran # monit /bin/mplayer -d 300 -l monit.log. That was when mplayer was playing songs and everything was working fine.
Now when I boot up the computer today I find that there is no mplayer!!!
The log file does not show anything - the man page does not say why monit would remove a working application. Can anyone help me and understand what happened?

Maybe you're using some other application named 'monit' but if you were running monit then I have no clue why you would be running something like 'monit /bin/mplayer'. Monit monitors applications, it does not delete them, and the way you ran monit is not how you use it. Just reinstall mplayer.

Yes, that seems like the only option. I will do that however the monit I have is installed by the debian dvd. This makes me scared to log in as root and run commands I am not really well veresed with but then until I run commands I will not really understand them, will I?

Heh, no. That's too easy. Most applications come with manual pages and documentation. While some may regard certain documentation as stale, incomplete, overly technical or outright cryptic the manual page for monit definitely does state what monit does and how it does that in a non-ambiguous way. While you may not like it reading manual pages and documentation, preferably before executing commands, enhances self-reliance and helps keep the system from malfunctioning. Executing commands in a happy-go-lucky fashion OTOH eventually leads to fear. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate and hate leads to thinking prequels are a Good Thing.
