Debian TEXT only running hot?

I recently found a laptop that had a broken / failing graphics card so i installed debian and did not opt to install the desktop environment.

This system runs on my network and i connect to it through putty.

My main issue is its running hot, i touch the bottom of the laptop and its hot. This computer isn't doing anything, its running in text mode (and the lid is closed so the screen is not on) why is it so hot.

Are there any configuration changes i can make to reduce the heat? I tried to look myself online but could not find much.

Is there a way i could config it so it would go into like sleep mode after x min and wake on a lan request?

Keep in mind i only have a command line interface.

Thanks.
