Debian NEWBIE! HELP

Hi there!

I am a computing student and current subject is linux! I thought it would be cool to get debian and play around with it. I have a couple of questions! Basically i want to install FireFox and other applications but im not quite sure how to do it! if i 'cd' to the directory '/home/joe/Desktop/Downloads' and then what do i type?! ive tried a number of different commands and it oftern comes back with error saying permission 13 are you root? what is that??? Also if im in the terminal and for instance i type

joe@unknown00115b77a6c0:~$ apt-get install apache2
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

Please help! cheers joe
