Debian Mail

Near the end of a fresh debian installation it asks me to set up some kind of mail thing... what is this about? I dont include any mail server .debs. Is it for SENDING mail? and if so, how do I configure it properly?

Also, LILO always tells me their are other bootable partitions, other that the one I just installed, when there arnt... what is this?
