Debian - issues with X or USB
Ok, to start, I search for this question and found nothing. If I've simply overlooked something, sorry. Here's my problem:

I was having trouble starting X under Debian bc of "no screens found" well i changed that XFree86 file so my drivers were vesa, problem sloved....? Nope. I can't start KDE because of an error with my peripherals, I can go into GNOME but it sucks. It's like my mouse is doing as it wishes and eventually gets to my requests (how kind). Menus drop and select with only a drag over, as if the mouse is continuously clicking. Also, left goes up, right goes down, control is nearly impossible. I found options on how to fix this from earlier posts but to no avail. I'm led to believe the reason that I can't start KDE is similar to why GNOME is acting up. I don't know off the top of my head the error from KDE as im in (sigh) windows right now but I hope I've said enough to begin trouble shooting. My mouse is a USB Logitech Wheel Mouse, and im running Debian 3.0r2.
Also, when I do: 'shutdown now' from the konsole, it brings me to "maintenance mode" and on the screen a few lines up it says:
modprobe: can't locate module char-major-10-135
well neither can I! if anyone has any ideas, it would be much appreciated. thanks.

hi, i got the same problems with X in woody. these problems were gone when i upgraded my xfree86 to experimental (my drivers weren't working for nvidia).
when i installed debian i was using knoppix and installed it with knx-hdinstall to my harddrive. knoppix 3.3 is based on sid and sarge and using a more up to date xfree86 and drivers and auto detect for hardware. give it a try. after installing it, use kpackage to remove all knoppix related stuff (search for knx or knoppix) and update ur system.
this worked fine for me. and while removing knoppix stuff you will learn how to get color for your console and other stuff.
