You wanted to say you get this:
Code:
Loading, please wait...
/dev/sda4: recovering Journal
/dev/sda4: clean, 287602/12197888 files, 9247031/4878128 blocks
[ 2.941650] systemd[1]: Job paths.target/start deleted to break ordering cycle starting with basic.target/start
[ 2.941731] systemd[1]: Jobb rpcbind.service/start deleted to break ordering cycle starting with basic.target/start
Or is it something else now?

You sisn't get any errors though. Otherwise, when I asked you about them you would have mentioned and detailed the errors.
Bye

# apt-get install jwm xinit
$ echo "exec jwm" > .xinitrc
$ startx

$ less /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(if you don't get the jwm environment.)

Debian defaults to run level 2. Which it runs X from if the things it needs are installed. If X fails to start it goes back to a command line environment. As others have guessed, I'd also guess that your video driver and kernel are not good bed fellows. Noting that kernel updates with non-distro provided drivers means you have to re-install said non-distro provided drivers with EVERY update to the kernel, xorg, mesa, ... ... ... Which can be tricky if you need a gui browser to download the latest driver, but need the latest driver to have a gui environment to download the latest driver.

# apt-get install nvidia-kernel-amd64
(or whatever applies)

Or revert back to a non-nvidia graphics stack (vesa / fb).

# apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-core libgl1-mesa-glx linux-image-amd64
(and maybe a few others that might matter)

These errors are not nvidia errors, did you search web?

http://unix.stackexchange.com/questi...-cycle-systemd
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=124361
