Debian install issues (dhcp)

I've installed a couple of distros in the past: slackware, redhat, and mandrake; but, slackware has always been the easiest for me. Now I'm trying to get debian going for a number of reasons but it's really a pain in the buttocks. I do have some questions. This isn't just a rant.

First I had the problem of my keyboard not being detected into the install program. That confused me somewhat since the keyboard worked in the boot program. Eventually I learnt that I had to disable LEGACY USB in my bios. Will that make it difficult to use my USB mouse? My keyboard is PS/2.

Getting through the install was simple enough from then on, until I got to the network setup. Now I'm using the 30 meg net install cd image, so getting network going is important. I told it to try DHCP and it hung for a while, like slackware when DHCP wasn't working on bootup, so I knew it wasn't going to work.

It should have worked though since I know DHCP was generally pretty good in the past (my slack problems were on modem and it was just an accident that I set it up). Earlier in the install I added a + next to the TULIP driver under "net". That's the one that always works in slackware.

I'm on cable via a hub. The hub is almost transparent to the network, I haven't had problems in the past.

Can anybody help me? Perhaps the network module wasn't really loaded? Not much I can do locked inside of an install program, as far as I know. After adding TULIP it said that it initialized properly.
