Question debian GUI/emacs?

I am a newbie

I recently installed Debian on an old Compaq Presario 4860 that is not online, I used tasksel and choose X Windows, desktop enviornment, and C\C++ development. When the system boots I recieve a message that X server cannot start, so i view the X server output:

Warning: process set to nice value 0 instead of -10 as requested

then a bunch of stuff i dont understand, and at the end of the info:

(EE)VGA(0): Driver cannot support depth 24
(EE) Screen found, but none have a useable configuation

Fatal server error:
no screen found

So now I am asked to run the X configuration program. I configure the card and the monitor the best i kknow how. and try and restart x server again the screen will blink a couple time and I am back to the message that X server cannot start so i give up and try things from the regular old prompt which leads me to my sceond problem I want to use emacs but the only available text editor seems to be vi, where is emacs? I thought it would be included in the c\c++ development packege, incase it isnt i have a copy on CD but dont know how to install it from the cd.
Hope I explained things well enough for someone to help. thx
