debian /etc/apt/sources.list update problem

i have entered the url at /etc/apt/sources.list but i can not save it an the message is that i have not permission.

ive in tered as single user mode using root pass wards and entered /etc/apt/sources.listat the command promt but still it says permission denied

while i can not enter the url and update atp-get, cant install the softwers

can u tell what is wrong with it?

/etc/apt/sources.list is not an executable file.

To insatll an application, you start a terminal as root user, then give the command: apt-get install <filename>
where <filename> is the name of the file to install.

Or, you can use Synaptic for a GUI (visual) application (frontend) that does the same as apt-get.

Jus by entering URL you cannot install any new s/w.
sources.list has a list of repositories.
So probably u can better use Adept-Manager GUI client to install new apps.

To update ur packages using terminal.

#sudo apt-get update
#sudo apt-get install <package-name>

bingo... u got the package installed
