debian based with xfce4 default
 

i am looking for a debian based distro that uses xfce4 as its default gui, i would like xfce4 as the default because i am a newb and i am not too formiliar with the file system so i have a hard time setting up the menues from scratch

also i would really like an easy to install distro...i can handle setting up partitions, but anything more than that i would like to be automagic

Do the base install (suggest the new sarge installer) then xserver-xfree86 then install the desktop manager of your choice via apt. i.e. apt-get install xserver-xfree86 xfce4

i assume you mean base install of debian?!?

anyways, i am looking for a debian based distro that fully supports xfce4, if i wanted to go the rout you mentioned ( wich i kinda am for now) i would just continue to use ubuntu with xfce4.

i just dont want to break something, and then be able to have any help to fix it, as default for ubuntu is gnome......wich is fine...if i must, ill just use that, but i like xfce4...........ne ways

A base install of Debian Sarge is very straight forward providing you know what hardware you are using. A lot of the information should be available from your current installation. Thereafter you just go ahead with what I suggested above. The big advantage with a pure Debian system is that you know there are no mixtures of applications in the system and it will be very stable. Debian based distros tend to be mix and match types that make you reliant on packages from the originator.
The alernative for ubuntu is to apt-get install desktop you want and select it as the default when the option comes up going on to the desktop. I have not used Ubuntu but with my Debian Sarge and Woody systems there is a menu that comes up so that you can select which ever desktop manager you want. There are 3 options as standard.

For a Debian based distro that uses XFCE, try XFLD. You can get it at http://www.xfld.org/Xfld/en/index.html

It is based on Knoppix and it is easily installed on your hard drive. It's even using the latest beta of XFCE with Rox!

Just how do you install XFLD? With the knoppix install script? Which script? Knoppix HD install or Knoppix-installer or what? Did you actually install it? Thanks!
