Debian 7 (Kali) Linux GNOME Oh no something has gone wrong
Hello, as you see from the title I am having problems with GNOME. I wanted to install gnome so I have followed how to do this on official website, but only got the bright gray screen with text "Oh no something has gone wrong" and a button "Log out". Could somebody please help me?

You are using an old version of kali. You can either edit your sources.list & bring system current or download the current version which is Jessie.
As for the error message, it's usually the graphics driver isn't installed for me. I'm not sure but check to see if kali uses the firmware-linux-nonfree package. Which graphics card is it thats on system |
It issss installed...
IDK, what packages would be for the graphic cards from following picture from link? http://i.imgur.com/yFL0Gp7.png |
Is it a laptop? What make & model?
|
Alienware M14x r2 with additional RAM.

If you lack Linux experience Kali is not the distro for you. If you intend to use Kali for what it is used for by 99% of the script kiddies trying to crack into something, you don't deserve to get it working.
If you want to use Linux for normal tasks, Kali is not for you. Try Mint or Ubuntu. jlinkels |

every operating system has a " TARGET " user the type of user it is geared for For Kali that user is the person that can FROM MEMORY wright the guides and tutorials on installing a Desktop Environment also with Kali being a VERY !!!! special SINGLE PURPOSE operating system it is VERY!!! unwise to change any of the "source list" for differernt repos USE!!! only the ones in the kali default !!! as to Gnome kali DEFAULTS!!!!!!!! to using gnome3 however on laptops the "FALLBACK" is likely used do to the cpu/gpu combos used so GNOME was already installed If you really want to LEARN to use Kali #1 register and log into the Kali forum http://forums.kali.org/ ( apparently THIS is a test -you have to figure out HOW to register, a LOT of people seam not to be able to do this easy task ) then #2 sign up for the Offensive Security classes https://www.kali.org/penetration-tes...th-kali-linux/ https://www.offensive-security.com/i...th-kali-linux/ ( this is ALSO a test, as in you have to pass a test to take the classes) |
jlinkels - I am using Kali Linux for pentesting (not Black Hat), I (illegally :D) work with a company as an IT specialist :)
John VV - well, ok :D I will try to get them. |
But still, I guess there's something wrong with the drivers.

You need to go to the kali site to see what the present sources.list is comprised of for kali Jessie & update your sources.
|
My sources.list and official ones are the same :)

Nvidia should load automatically.
Can you log into the console? Do you have network established? Nvidia is going to be in the non-free sources for proprietary driver. What happens when you try Quote:
