Thumbs down Debian 5.0.1 Update

When trying to update Debian 5.0.1, the update manager shows me two updates. When I click to update it comes up with an error "could not create configuration directory /home/root/synaptic-mkdir no such file or directory.
Any ideas.

Yes, it appears that UpdateManager is damaged (and it seems to be a know bug in update-manager version 0.68.debian-7 - it has been reported and confirmed in a variety of ways). It seems to be the front-end only - all tools work otherwise. You can use Synaptic instead (reload, mark all updates, apply).
