Debian 4 grub error 17 on first install of linux
 

Hi

I just new to linux and getting a problem with debian 4 .

After installing the netcd on linux , after root boot
the machine comes up with

Grub loading stage 1.5
Grub loading please wait
error 17.




Machine details

AMD 3000
2 gb ram

120gb hdd. * This has windows Xp on it and is
primary hdd ide 1
300 gb hdd ide 1 on secondary.

500gb hdd is on ide 2 with a asus dvd rw drive.

What is the best way to fix debian so that i can boot
into debian 4 and windows xp.

Looks like grub isn't recognising a partition type. You might have deeper problems than just grub. This bootable disk has a pretty cool wizard that will rebuild grub for you, but that won't really matter if the rest of your install is screwed. It won't hurt anything to try, and it might work. Depends on what else is going on.

Error 17 is related to GRUB being unable to read the partition you have specified it should boot from. Do you know what filesystem type you used for the partition? The main thing to check is that all your (x,y) sets in the menu.lst file correspond to the correct harddrives/partitions. Also ensure that your Windows partition has the "rootnoverify" option set. PS - If you don't know how to view your menu.lst file: you need to boot using a live-cd or rescue-cd type system. The file you need usually lives under /boot/grub/menu.lst, though it might be different on your system.

can you be a little clearer of your drive setup.

I assume you mean on first ide controller
master is 120 G ....C partition is first
slave is 300 G

second controller
master is 500 G
slave is optical

is that correct?

it still does not help solve your linux partitions.

2) have a read of my troubleshooter and signature.

c partition (if correct) is (hd0,0)

linux may be (hd1,....something

if you remember how you partitioned the linux pls let us know

or try the troubleshooter.

Thanks for your help.

I used the supergrub to fix the partition table.
Then debian would not boot, but I found a new
version r3 of debian 4 and deleted the partition.
I re-install the linux on hda 0 , changing the partition for
windows so that it was 80 gb and used the rest for
the debian 4 r3 and swap on the 120gb hdd.

Then reinstalled debian 4 r3 , machine booted up fine and worked ok.

The reason I wanted to use the 500gb
hdd was for video files and have every thing on the same hdd.
Is there a good linux problem for editing Digital video camera
home videos.
