www.debian.org; It's a (imnsho) very good distro. It comes in three tiers: stable/testing/unstable; I'd recommend testing for desktop use, or unstable for the daring
one quality of debian that I like is that if you only select the 'main' branch of packages, you only get free software (according to the Debian Free Software Guidelines, which is pretty close to OSI's definition, and quite OK for me, a believer in all things GNU).
Another benefit of Debian is that they are actively porting things to run on HURD (see gnu.org if you don't know what it is).
