dear linux admin .....i am the first user
hi i donot know how to get help .just asking first time if there is response to my question. i have installed linux ubuntu operating system and i am trying to instal yahoo messenger and realplayer .believe me i am trying 3ree conective days iand i am helpless to instal them .please if somebody can help to me .i really like ubunto operating system as it has more internet speed to my system as well good audio performance. i do not want to remove my ubuntu operating syetem . please tell me easy and brief way to install software downloading from internet .thank you so much Anwar Saeed

The normal way to install software in Ubuntu is to use Synaptic Package Manager. From there you install packages that are compiled for your system, they are tested and will work.
Neither Yahoo Messanger or RealPlayer are in the Ubuntu repos. So, some things you need to understand. Software from the internet, unless it is specifically for linux, will not run on linux, at least not easily. Next, you will need the source code, that is not always supplied by some companies. The normal way to get source code to run, is you need to compile the source code, into an executable binary file(s), and then install it. The supplier gives instructions on where to install. If they supply binary code, you need to look for .deb files for a Ubuntu system. No guarantee it will install, or work. There are instructions around to install.deb packages not created for Ubuntu. Next, why do you want these specific programs? There are lots of Ubuntu programs that do the same things. RealPlayer is proprietary AFAIK. It plays videos, and music, so does VLC and its in the repos. Messenger programs are a dime a dozen. Pick on in the repos. Do a little googling to see what other people use. Linux programs work just as well, if not better than the ones you mention. O.K. so I said you can get them to run. Possible ways, run them in Wine. Before you get all excited, spend some time and find out if wine is known to run these apps. Then look into installing and configuring wine. That will take you 3 months, not 3 days. Next way, install a virtual machine like Sun's VirtualBox. Install windows in v-box, install the windoze versions of those apps. Run them. V-box is not all that hard to install. Windoze is windbloze, if you have a CD, with some reasonable version on it, install it, update it... Time, if you know what you are doing is about 2 days. I know, Ive done it several times with WinXP. BTW, learn to use the shift key, punctuate, and spell check, if you want to be taken seriously. |
RealPlayer is no longer developing RealPlayer for Linux, but archived copies are available at the Helix website (it was based on Helix).
They don't seem to have the *.deb files, just *.rpms (which are not Ubuntu compatible) and sources. For older versions, they have *.bin (binary) installer files. You download them and execute them to do the install. I have used RealPlayer for Linux almost as long as I have used Linux, because sometimes I have no choice. I can attest that it is nowhere nearly so obnoxious, intrusive, and impolite as its Windows cousin. Linux offers a number of messaging programs that are Yahoo-compatible, of which Pidgin is likely the most widely-used. I know that one of them comes with Ubuntu, but I forget which one. |

please i am having problem with my linux ununtu 11.10 version. the problem no.1 is my lcd monitor hp1730 this version of ubuntu does not detect .please help to solve this problem how can i detect lcd monitor to ubuntu 11.10 No.2 the problem with version of ubuntu is it does not install vga driver. dears i am using dell optiplex gx260...because of this graphics are very bad while i am playing a video song ...because of this some times media player stops showing video and video helds but sound keeps playing.i have tried many things to solve the problem but all in vain..i am fed up now but i like to prefer ubuntu on windows cause it performance untill i get this problem..please if some has reply to solve this problem . ..............thankx......... |
