dd does not work with read-only files

I put an audio CD in a CD-ROM (/dev/hdc), and a writable CD in a CD burner (/dev/hdb) in my computer.

k3b copies the audio CD onto the blank writable CD just fine.

When I try to use dd, however, as in (from terminal)

dd if=/dev/hdc of=/dev/hdb

dd refuses to work on the grounds that the "if" is "read only."

Is it my breath?

I don't think dd will do that for you unless you pipe the output to the blank disk with a CD/DVD burning application like cdrecord. Although I've never done it, I'm only assuming this would be the route you would have to take. Normally you would make an ISO of the disk with dd and burn the ISO CD image file to a blank disk with burning applications.

What user are you when you do the dd, do you have the
permission to access the raw device?

Tink,

I'm doing it as root. Permissions are not a problem. Remember, k3b copies it just fine and then burns it.

Also, I'll see what dmesg says and post it later. Basically, I'm putzing around with dd and this limitation ("read-only") threw me. From what I read, I didn't think that that would be a problem.

I'm pretty sure you can't simply write to a CDRW... I would imagine burning a CD is not a normal block device write operation. You could write to an intermediate file on your hard disk, or large flash drive, and then burn that using k3b or similar.
